SOUTH DAKOTA
THE MOUNT RUSHMORE STATE The Black Hills are the highest mountains east of the Rockies. Mt. Rushmore, in this group, is famous for the carvings of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt by Gutzon Borglum. A memorial to Crazy Horse is also being carved in granite near Custer. The Badlands are known as “the playground” of the dinosaur. The Badlands National Park has fossils including a dog-sized camel, three-toed horse, and saber-toothed cat. |
The Tenth District is represented by WFA member, Gary Satterthwaite. Gary is a descendant of Stephen Wing and Oseah Dillingham through their only surviving son, Nathaniel Wing. His biography in the 2003 copy of the OWL, page 5612 reports that Gary is from New Town, North Dakota. He and his wife have four daughters, Carmen Renee, Carol Lynn, Laurel Diane and Joanna Kay. At that writing they had seven grandchildren, two girls and five boys. Gary & Sue live on a medium-sized ranch along the shores of Lake Sakakwea, in western North Dakota. Gary farms 425 acres and rents the pasture and hayland. In additon to the farming, his is also a sub on thr rural route of the local post office and a part-time crop hail adjuster. The latter job has taken him to various parts of Minnesota, Nebraska, and Colorado as well as most of North Dakota. Several years ago his wife, Sue and mother, Barbara Wing Satterthwaite (former Tenth District Rep.) compiled a Wing family tree. This started their interest in the Wing Family Association. sue was fortunate to accompany Barbara to the Wing Fort House for one of the annual meetings. shortly before that trip, she had purchased an upright concert grand piano at a local auction - lo and behold - it was made by "Wing & Son" in the early 1900's WAY TO GO!!! |

NORTH DAKOTA
THE PEACE GARDEN STATE North Dakotastraddles the international Boundary between North Dakota and the Canadian province of Manitoba. It honors the long friendship between the two nations. This 2,300-acre garden plants 100,000 flowers annually and features a Peace Chapel as well as an 18- foot floral clock. In 1956 the North Dakota Motor Vehicle Department placed the words “Peace Garden State” on license plates; the name proved so popular that it was formally adopted by the 1957 legislature. Theodore Roosevelt was sent to live in North Dakota for health reasons before he became president. The name Roughrider State refers to the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry that Theodore Roosevelt organized to fight in the Spanish-American War. |

MONTANA BIG SKY COUNTRY Montana is home to two major National Parks - Glacier and Yellowstone - and numerous state parks and recreation sites
Whether your goal is bagging a trophy elk or spending an afternoon or a week on our blue-ribbon trout streams we have tips on where to go, what you need for the trip and information on rules and regulations for hunting and fishing in Montana. The coldest temperature on record for Montana is the coldest temperature for the entire continental U.S. On January 20, 1954 -70 °F was recorded at a gold mining camp near Rogers Pass. Temperatures vary greatly on such cold nights, and Helena, 40 miles (64 km) to the southeast had a low of only −36 °F (−37.8 °C).[4] Winter cold spells last a week or so. They are the result of cold continental air coming south from Canada. The front is often well defined, causing a large temperature drop in a 24 hour period. Conversely, air flow from the southwest results in "Chinooks". These steady 25-50mph (or more) winds can suddenly warm parts of Montana, especially areas just to the east of the mountains, where temperatures sometimes rise up to 50 - 60°F.[4] |
