FIRST DISTRICT
(Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island) WELCOME TO MARCIA A. WING - THE NEW FIRST DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE From the OWL, 2007 Edition |
Marcia and Deborah O. Wing, attended the 350th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of the Sandwich Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) at the East Sandwich Meetinghouse (off Springhill Road, not far from Wing Fort House), held August 24th and 25th. The Sandwich Monthly Meeting of Friends is the oldest Quaker meeting in continuous existence in the United States. Established in 1658, Sandwich Monthly Meeting encompasses the Friends' Meetings in East Sandwich, West Falmouth and Yarmouth. As part of the Anniversary Celebration various skits, "Cast of Voices from the Past", including several Wings, was the program. One of the Wing ancestors depicted was Annie Ewer Rose (1867-1971) who lived to the age of 104, and maintained East Sandwich Meeting for many years during a period of decline in membership. In the CAPE COD MAGAZINE, dated Sept/Oct 2007, the write-up "From Generation to Generation" recognized historic Cape Cod family names. The name of Wing was among seven most recognizable to visitors. Deborah O. Wing, 91, resident of Sandwich, past OWL Editor and WFA First District Representative, was interviewed. Two pictures, one of Deborah seated in the Wing Fort House, and one of the Fort House are in the magazine. The same photographs were displayed at the Cape Cod American Association of University Women (CCAAUW), of which she is a member. The CCAAUW saluted Deborah Wing, Honorary Life Member, for her contributions to Cape Cod Ancestry. Both Deborah and sister, Martha Lombardi, lament the fact that the family has scattered off the Cape. Says Deborah: "There's nobody here who lived on the Cape." "We would like to encourage other Wings to come back here to carry on the line." Says Martha: "Sadly, there are now only four Wings in Sandwich - Martha (93), Deborah (91),and our niece Marcia (OWL P-5663). The fourth is Richard Wing who is unrelated to us." "I am concerned about the future of the Wing family in Sandwich." "Wouldn't you like to live in this beautiful town? Pictured in the article which cannot be displayed here was the home of Martha Lombardi (husband Tom, deceased), 27 Chipman Rd. at Sandwich, MA where the two sisters, our loyal Wing Cousins, presently reside. FIRST DISTRICT (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island) Deborah O. Wing - District Representative From the OWL, 2006 Edition Wing members of the first District were busy in June helping with the annual National Wing Family Reunion in sandwich June 23 - 25, 2006. Local Wings were responsible for the refreshments on Registration Day at the Wing Fort House. Marcia Wing of Sandwich provided the flowers and blueberry cake; Peg Rasmussen of Wellfleet, MA baked Banbury tarts, a real hit. Other helpers included Joslyn Wing of Lincoln, RI, Theresa Garvey of West Falmouth at the registration desk, Lois Wing of Portageville, NY and several other WFA members. Despite the heavy rain, especially during the clambake, everyone adapted cheerfully and seemed to be having a great time. The chief news to report for the First District is the several changes in leadership that have occurred this past year. Fred A. Wing, honorary member and president from 1981 - 1986, died in Lynn, MA on February 28, 2006. His memorial service was held on May 20 in Oakland, ME attended by relatives and Synchronized Swim Team friends. His burial was in the Wing Plot in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterville, ME. Another very loyal member of the Wing Family, Susan Cobb of Cataumet, MA, long time curator for WFA, died March 7, 2006. Kathy Wheelock, caretaker of the Wing Fort House, and I (Deborah O. Wing) attended her memorial service on March 19 as representatives of the Wing Family. We will miss Sue's efficient management of the Fort House "Store" and her careful attention to the Restoration Fund. In addition, Martha Lombardi, long time publicity chairman; and Frank E. Wing, III, former WFA Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer, have both retired from their positions, due to health reasons. A final change is that I have resigned my position as First District Representative. I am happy to report that my niece, Marcia Wing, has generously agreed to serve in my position. Over the years I have very much enjoyed my contacts with the Wing Family association, both as Editor of the OWL and as First District representative. I wish continuing success to the Wing Family. Aadded note from the editor: The Wing family of America, Inc., thanks you, Deborah, for your many years of faithful service to the organization, especially your generous and charming presence greeting Wing Families and visitors to reunions at the Fort House. We look forward to your warm smile at many future Wing gatherings in Sandwich.
