WING FAMILY REUNION OF PHILLIPS, MAINE
2008

Submitted by Shawna Spenser, Secretary

The 112th reunion of the Wings of Phillips, Maine was held Sunday, September 2, 2007 at the Wing Pavilion in Phillips. It was a picture perfect day with an attendance of sixty to enjoy visiting with family and friends. President, Bradley Wing, called the meeting to order. Jasmine MArie Spencer proudly held the flag for the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary, Shawna Spenser, read her report. Treasurer, Bud Hagan, gave his report. Both reports were accepted as presented. Raymond Wing was unable to attend, but Flossie Dere, WFA member, had a copy of the seven deaths reported. Names of the deceased can be read in this issue of the OWL under Obituaries.

Judy Allen gave the nominating committee report that all officers and committee members will serve for another year, with the exception of treasurer, Harold "Bud" Hagan, who is retiring after twenty years. Sharon Huff was elected to fill that position.

Old Business: It was decided that each family brong only one or two items for the family auction due to an abundance of items and more time needed for visiting and some games.

New Business: Shawna Spencer suggested to renew the use of name badges as was started many years ago. Badges with red ribbons were used to identify Wing descendants and blue for spouses. Gary Labbee offered a button press to make the job easier. Shawna also suggested mailing out notices to families in the hopes of increasing attendnace. Linda Barlette's family sported beautiful T-shirts, green with a gold owl and writing "It's a Wing Thing". A sign-up sheet was suggested for those who would be interested in purchasing one. After much discussion it was voted to replace the wooden section of the pavilion floor with cement. Vice President, Randy Labbe, volunteered to choose a committee and do the work in June 2008. At the same time members will paint the woodwork. Other proposed work was the building of barn doors on the back of the pavilion to make easier access for handling tables and swing set.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned. After sharing a potluck lunch, the annual auction was held.

In 1933 it was voted to hold the Phillips Reunion on the Sunday before LAbor Day, beginning in 1934, and that calendar date continues to the present. Prior to 1934 reunins were usually held the fourth Thursday in August. For a short while, about 1910, reunions were a 2-day event with families coming by horse and buggy and staying overnight. Those early reunions included everyone in the neighborhood, even if not a Wing descendant.

Despite the weather (showers) the spirit of approximately seventy-five people in attendance at the Wing Pavilion for the Phillips Maine reunion was not "dampened." President Brad Wing called the formal meeting to order at 10 a.m. The reports of the Secretary, Treasurer and Historian were read and accepted. It was voted to continue with the same list of officers. The traditional potluck lunch was shared by all followed by an auction that netted the reunion a tidy sum. the youngest attending this year was Zachery Spencer, age 16 months, and the oldest in attendance was Zeida Harnden, age 95. "Sam" Guy and her daughter, Tina, from Nevada traveled the farthest.

The Phillips Reunions began in 1892 (ten years before the creation of the WFA) and initially were held at the homes of various family membes until it was soon decided to create a location to permanently host the event. The Wing Pavilion was built in 1903, the year afte the formation of the WFA. The reunion has a swing set and seesaws for the young folks and a large variety of sporting activities.

The reunion is for the descendants of Dr. Samuel Wing and his wife, Mary B. Norcross; however all Wings are cordially invited to participate. Samuel was the son of Dr. Moses Wing, one of the "seven sons of Simeon" who founded the town of Wayne, Maine. His line is as follows: Dr. Samuel, Dr. Moses, Simeon, Ebenezer, Nathaniel, Stephen, Rev. John. Samuel and Mary settled in Phillips, ME shortly after they were married.
