THE WING ASSEMBLY OF MAINE
Submitted by Tina Wing Remour - Secretary From the OWL, 2007 Edition |
September 15, 2007 was a dark and rainy day. The colored leaves of fall were few as we drove the winding country roads to Kingfield, Maine. The Wing Assembly of Maine reunion was held in Webster Hall where cousins trickled in to a bright and cheery coffee hour. although we were without power for 20 minutes, it didn't seem to dampen our spirits. Therw wer 44 people in attendance with a number of faces we hadn't seen for a few years. It was wonderful to see them. The most senior of our group was Glenn H. Wing of Bingham, age 93. Our youngest attending child was 11-year-old Matt Bradbury of Raymond.
Our meeting began with a salute to the flag followed by announcements by President, Nancy Dalton, of love ones passed on, and a moment of silence for them. After reciting the Lord's Prayer, one by one the cousins introduced themselves to the group. The first order of business was the treasurer's report, given by Kim Bachelder, and the secretary's report given by Raymond T. Wing. The next was the Wing Ring Cemetery report given by committe chairman, Marion Sherman. Over a year ago the Wing Assembly of Maine started to raise funds to clean and repair the stones and monuments in the cemetery. Jean Bradbury wrote letters to all the members asking for donations, and Don Wing received and organized the donations. A firm in Hallowell, Maine was engaged to do the work. The project is now completed to everyone's satisfaction. The gate and sign over the gate was also cleaned, giving th entire cemetery area a whole new appearance. Wings of the Maine Assembly can take pride in this worthwhile achievement. The Wing Ring Cemetery was added to the NAtional Registry of Historic Landmarks on October 16, 1991. Marion Sherman and the cemetery committee will now focus on purchasing a plaque to commenorate the national historic importance of the Wing Ring Cemetery. We look forward to the report. Duluth Wing of Eustis, Maine, delivered an interesting presentation on the Benedict Arnold expedition against Quebec through Maine territory in the Revolutionary War era. He has spent years with other Benedict Arnold enthusiasts, retracing the path taken by Arnold and his men through the Maine woods. Many artifact have been recovered such as coins, buckles, nails, and musket balls that Duluth had on display for all to see. Duluth concluded his talk by playing his harmonica and everyone joining in singing "The Walls of Quebec". Flagstaf Lake Memorabilia was also on display. Flagstaff Lake, like Kingfield, is located in the western mountains of Maine and until 1949, there were three towns: Flagstaff, Dead River and Bigelow located where the lake sits today. A dam was built on the Dead River for hyfroeelectric power in 1949 creating Flagstaff Lake, thus ending the existence of the towns. Some of our Wing cousins once called this place home. The Wing Assembly of Maine reunion will be held next year on the second Saturday of the month, September 13, 2008 at Webster Hall, Kingfield, Maine. Coffee hour begins at 9:30 a.m. followed by our annual meeting, lunch, and guest speaker, Kenny Wing. He will give a tlk on Indian culture during the time Benedict Arnold passed through Maine in 1775. We invite you to join us for the Wing Assembly of Maine Reunion and hope to see you there. THE WING ASSEMBLY OF MAINE Submitted by Tina Wing Remour - Secretary From the OWL, 2006 Edition This year was the twentieth annual reunion of the Wing Assembly of Maine held in Readfield, ME on September 16, 2006. We had a comforatable crowd of forty people ranging in age from 3 year old Owen Barter, to two 95 year olds Edward Surowiec and Zelda Harnden. The Readfield Grange Hall served as our meeting place and the Grangers prepared a wonderful roast pork dinner with carrot cake for dessert. Our meeting began after a social hour of coffee and conversation - for some our reunion is the only time they see one another. President Kim Bachelder led us in a salute to the flag, the Lord's Prayer, and moment of silence for soldiers and loved ones we lost in the past year. Old business was presented by Marion Sherman of the Wing Ring Cemetery Committee. the Wing Assembly of Maine had raised money to have the stones of the Wing Ring Cemetery cleaned. The cemetery is a remarkable site in Wayne, ME and has generation of Wing settlers dating back to the 1780's. The seven Wing brothers who moved to Maine from Massachusetts played a part in the founding of the rural town of Wayne. There was some interesting discussion on this topic among a few Wing cousins during the meeting. the cleaning project of the stones will begin within a month by a local company contracted by the Wing Assembly of Maine. Both the Treasurer's and Secretary's Reports were presented and accepted. Our guest speaker was Jean Bradbury, who presented a talk on the family of John, first son of Rev. John Wing and Wife, Deborah. We all enjoyed her account of the first early generations from the line of John. The Wing Assembly of Maine has a change of officers for the upcoming year. With the resignations of Treasurer, Don Wing, and Secretary, Tina Remour, our new officers will be: President, Nancy Dalton (formerly Vice President); Vice President, Susan Gray; Secretary, Raymond Wing and Treasurer, Kim Bachelder (formerly President). Thank you cousins for donations, totaling $309 collected at the meeting to support the Wing Assembly of Maine. Our twenty-first annual reunion will be September 17, 2007 in Kingfield, Maine. Program and dinner committees have been selected to organize our next event. Raymond T. Wing, WFA genealogist, received one new membership at the reunion, Philip Maurice Wing of Kingfield, ME. Ray also sold three Books (Wing Genealogy, Volume II). At the conclusion of our meeting and tasty lunch, our program continued at the REadfield Historical Museum, thanks to Flo Drake, member of the Readfield Historical Society. There were some impressive displays of local history as well as a large index card catalog of all documented Wing related research fro the area. All the cousins enjoyed the program very much. The day was beautifully warm with a bright sun and blue skies. It was a perfect September day all around as we said farewell to one another until next year when we will gather in Kingfield, Maine. Note: The OWL thanks Tina Remour for her good reports and fine photos during her five years as Secretary for the Wing Assembly of Maine. Her written reports and the disk she sends each year has made it easy for the editor to forward all on to our printers. |
