Luke Kornet: A Wing Cousin an NBA National Champion!

Some of us were lucky enough to view an eclipse of the sun this year.

But did you know one of our Wing cousins has another definition of eclipse?  Luke Kornet, center for the Boston Celtics, uses the “Eclipse” as part of his playing strategy.

In this version, Luke waits for the opposing player to shoot.  At the last second, he jumps, lifting his seven-foot one inch frame in the air, hands reaching toward the ceiling.  Imagine suddenly seeing a player in front of you obscuring the basket.  It is enough to put the shooter off balance, making him shoot higher than he intended.  Statistics prove Luke’s strategy works.

Just before this year’s eclipse, the Celtics released this picture, telling their fans “No need for shades today, Luke’s got us.”

Luke is the son of Frank Kornet, a former NBA player, and Tracy (Wing) Kornet, who anchors the news in Nashville, Tennessee.  He has two equally impressive … and tall … siblings.  Both John and Nicole played basketball for their college teams.  John is now the chief investment officer for a wealth management company. In the picture, left to right, are Luke, Luke’s wife Tierney, John’s wife Kori, Nicole, and John.

If you saw the movie “Space Jam: A New Legacy” you would have seen Nicole playing the role of White Mamba.  There can be a lot of down time while filming. During one of those lags, LeBron James, the star of the movie, challenged Nicole to a shooting contest.  I am proud to announce that our Wing cousin beat LeBron James 2 games to 1!

In order to write this article, I reached out to Tracy Wing Kornet to ask her about her son Luke.  While she understandably wanted to respect his privacy, she did tell me about his perfect SAT math score and double major in math and computer science at Vanderbilt. His musical talent includes playing both guitar and piano. She told me about his fun-loving side though anyone can see it if they watch him play. He’ll burst into song while sitting on the bench with his teammates.  It’s easy to see the joy he feels as he runs down the court, full smile ahead.

Tracy describes her son this way:

But mainly – if I could share only one thing about my son – I would say that what most impresses me about Luke is how he has always been unabashedly himself:

standing up for what is right, caring greatly about others, living his strong faith, and not caring about the superficial things kids or adults his age seem consumed by.

On June 17 of this year the Boston Celtics won the NBA Championship over the Dallas Mavericks, four games to one! The proud owner of a championship ring, Luke Kornet has yet one more reason to flash that million-dollar smile.

The ancestry of Tracy Wing and her children John, Nicole, and Luke is as follows:

James Wing

William Wing

Bristol Wing

Bert Wing

William T Wing

Daniel Wing

Daniel Wing

Gershom Wing

Jedidiah Wing

Elisha Wing

Stephen Wing

Luke, John, and Nicole’s seventh great grandfather, Gershom Wing, will be a part of our “Revolutionary Wings” exhibit debuting next year.  Gershom refused to take an oath of allegiance, citing his Quaker faith.  Shortly after the war Gershom and his family moved to Leeds County, Ontario, Canada. Gershom’s great grandson and Tracy’s third great grandfather, William Thomas Wing, moved back to the United States, settling in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
